What Are Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
Special educational needs refer to learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for a child to learn compared to others their age. These needs may affect different areas of development, including:
- Understanding and processing information
- Emotional or behavioural regulation
- Concentration and attention span
- Hearing or vision
- Physical mobility
- Reading, writing, or other literacy skills
- Social communication and interaction
If your child is finding school more challenging than their peers and requires extra help, they may have SEN.
Not sure how to begin? Our legal specialists can explain your rights and guide you through the next steps.
How SEN Support Works
Schools must provide support for children with SEN, usually coordinated by a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). A tailored Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be put in place, setting out the strategies and support required. This may include:
- One-to-one support
- Input from external professionals
- Adapted teaching methods
However, if your child’s needs cannot be met by the school alone—or if the school does not recognise their needs—an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) may be necessary.
Understanding EHCPs
- Schools receive SEN funding, but resources are often limited.
- An EHCP provides extra funding and access to specialist support where school-level provision is not enough.
- Either parents or the school can request an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment directly from the local authority—you do not need to complete the full Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle first.
