What Are Special Educational Needs (SEN)?
SEN refers to learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for a child to learn and progress compared to others of the same age. These needs can affect many areas of development, including:
- Understanding and processing information
- Managing emotions and behaviour
- Concentration and attention
- Hearing or vision
- Physical movement or coordination
- Literacy skills such as reading and writing
- Communication and social interaction
If your child is struggling more than their peers and needs additional support at school, they may have SEN. Unsure what steps to take? Our legal experts are here to explain your rights and support you in securing the right help.
How SEN Support Works in Schools
Most schools are expected to identify and support children with SEN. This process is usually led by the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), who works with teachers to create an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
The IEP sets out the tailored support your child needs, which might include:
- One-to-one support
- Input from external specialists
- Adapted teaching methods
However, if your child’s needs go beyond what the school can provide—or if the school fails to identify or address those needs—a formal Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) may be necessary.
What You Need to Know About EHCPs
- School funding is limited and may not always cover the support your child requires.
- An EHCP can provide extra resources and access to specialist services not available through school support alone.
- You do not need to complete the ‘Assess, Plan, Do, Review’ cycle before requesting an EHC needs assessment—either you or the school can apply directly to the local authority.
